Surviving Art
Surviving Art explored the working and business realities of a career in art: how artists earn a living, sustain their careers and make time for their practice. The editorial challenge was to present a grounded picture of the profession for people interested in pursuing it.
I founded and developed the project through articles and a podcast, combining my own research and writing with critical, exploratory interviews. Conversations with gallerists, internationally recognised artists, art students and theorists examined how people supported themselves, what kept their careers going and how much time they could devote to making art.
Research associated with the project also included artist residencies in London in 2019 and Berlin in 2024. These provided opportunities to investigate art markets, gallery practices and the organisational and financial conditions of working in different cultural environments. The project and its associated research received support from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
Alongside the editorial work, I handled podcast production from preparation and recording through editing, publication and distribution, and developed the website. This connected the research with written and audio material that brought the conditions, decisions and demands behind an artistic career closer to readers and listeners.
